    Using an integrated information system to reduce interruptions and the number of non-relevant contacts in the inpatient pharmacy at tertiary hospital

    Patient care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals intended for high-quality and safe patient care. Accordingly, the team must work synergistically and communicate efficiently. In many hospitals, nursing and pharmacy communication relies mainly on telephone calls. In fact, numerous studies have reported telephone calls as a source of interruption for both pharmacy and nursing operations; therefore, the workload increases and the chance of errors raises. This report describes the implementation of an integrated information system that possibly can reduce telephone calls through providing real-time tracking capabilities and sorting prescriptions urgency, thus significantly improving traceability of all prescriptions inside pharmacy. The research design is based on a quasi-experiment using pre-post testing using the continuous improvement approach. The improvement project is performed using a six-step method. A survey was conducted in Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC) to measure the volume and types of telephone calls before and after implementation to evaluate the impact of the new system. Beforehand of the system implementation, during the two-week measurement period, all pharmacies received 4466 calls and the majority were follow-up calls. Subsequently of the integrated system rollout, there was a significant reduction (p > 0.001) in the volume of telephone calls to 2630 calls; besides, the calls nature turned out to be more professional inquiries (p > 0.001). As a result, avoidable interruptions and workload were decreased

    Investigation Interoperability Problems in Pharmacy Automation: A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

    The aim of this case study is to investigate the nature of interoperability problems in hospital systems automation. One of the advanced healthcare providers in Saudi Arabia is the host of the study. The interaction between the pharmacy system and automated medication dispensing cabinets is the focus of the case system. The research method is a detailed case study where multiple data collection methods are used. The modelling of the processes of inpatient pharmacy systems is presented using Business Process Model Notation. The data collected is analysed to study the different interoperability problems. This paper presents a framework that classifies health informatics interoperability implementation problems into technical, semantic, organisational levels. The detailed study of the interoperability problems in this case illustrates the challenges to the adoption of health information system automation which could help other healthcare organisations in their system automation projects

    Dynamical clustering of counterions on flexible polyelectrolytes

    Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the local dynamics of counterion-charged polymer association at charge densities above and below the counterion condensation threshold. Surprisingly, the counterions form weakly-interacting clusters which exhibit short range orientational order, and which decay slowly due to migration of ions across the diffuse double layer. The cluster dynamics are insensitive to an applied electric field, and qualitatively agree with the available experimental data. The results are consistent with predictions of the classical theory only over much longer time scales

    Integrating across memory episodes: Developmental trends

    Memory enables us to use information from our past experiences to guide new behaviours, calling for the need to integrate or form inference across multiple distinct episodic experiences. Here, we compared children (aged 9-10 years), adolescents (aged 12-13 years), and young adults (aged 19-25 years) on their ability to form integration across overlapping associations in memory. Participants first encoded a set of overlapping, direct AB- and BC-associations (object-face and face-object pairs) as well as non-overlapping, unique DE-associations. They were then tested on these associations and inferential AC-associations. The experiment consisted of four such encoding/retrieval cycles, each consisting of different stimuli set. For accuracy on both unique and inferential associations, young adults were found to outperform teenagers, who in turn outperformed children. However, children were particularly slower than teenagers and young adults in making judgements during inferential than during unique associations. This suggests that children may rely more on making inferences during retrieval, by first retrieving the direct associations, followed by making the inferential judgement. Furthermore, young adults showed a higher correlation between accuracy in direct (AB, BC) and inferential AC-associations than children. This suggests that, young adults relied closely on AB- and BC-associations for making AC decisions, potentially by forming integrated ABC-triplets during encoding or retrieval. Taken together, our findings suggest that there may be an age-related shift in how information is integrated across experienced episodes, namely from relying on making inferences at retrieval during middle childhood to forming integrated representations at different memory processing stages in adulthood

    Forensic capabilities for service-oriented architectures

    This report describes a framework to provide on-line forensic capabilities to service oriented architecture via Forensic Web Services (FWS) and runtime execution monitoring. The FWS is a new type of web services to be used by other web services (of an independent agency) to securely maintain transactional records of interest between other web services.     Simplicial Ricci Flow

    We construct a discrete form of Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations for a d-dimensional piecewise flat simplicial geometry, S. These new algebraic equations are derived using the discrete formulation of Einstein's theory of general relativity known as Regge calculus. A Regge-Ricci flow (RRF) equation is naturally associated to each edge, L, of a simplicial lattice. In defining this equation, we find it convenient to utilize both the simplicial lattice, S, and its circumcentric dual lattice, S*. In particular, the RRF equation associated to L is naturally defined on a d-dimensional hybrid block connecting â„“\ell with its (d-1)-dimensional circumcentric dual cell, L*. We show that this equation is expressed as the proportionality between (1) the simplicial Ricci tensor, Rc_L, associated with the edge L in S, and (2) a certain volume weighted average of the fractional rate of change of the edges, lambda in L*, of the circumcentric dual lattice, S*, that are in the dual of L. The inherent orthogonality between elements of S and their duals in S* provide a simple geometric representation of Hamilton's RF equations. In this paper we utilize the well established theories of Regge calculus, or equivalently discrete exterior calculus, to construct these equations.
